Video 1 In/Out?

I just moved from analog cable to digital cable. I'm trying to connect the new digital cable box to my Onkyo TX-SR500 receiver.

I have an RCA Red/White/Yellow cable going from the cable box to "Video 1 In" on the receiver. I ran another RCA Red/White/Yellow cable from "Video 1 Out" to the RCA input of my TV.

When I select "Video 1" on the receiver I hear audio from the cable box through the receiver's speakers. When I switch the TV to "Video" mode I was expecting to get audio and video from the receiver. I'm not getting video on the TV and no audio from the TV speakers.

If I plug the yellow cable into "Monitor Out" on the receiver I get video to the TV.

I want the option to watch TV and have the audio play through the receiver speakers or the TV speakers. I thought the audio and video automatically passed through the receiver from "Video 1 In" to "Video 1 Out". Is this how it works? Why do I get video from "Monitor Out" but not "Video 1 Out"?

Thank you.

Use the monitor out.

The video 1 out is for a VCR loop. and will need to be configured correctly in the settings (Onkyo). Note that the receiver will need to be on to relay the audio from the box. I am curious as to why you don't have a box with multiple outputs.

The sound should come from the audio ports of Video 1 Output to TV, and no matter which input you are using video should always come from Monitor out, which makes sense because no matter which input you connect it to, the video will always come out of the same output on the AV receiver, so in reality there is no reason to have multiple monitor outputs.

Good luck!
